What is Gummy Smile?

In an anatomically perfectly smile, the lip should sit just above the top of the teeth. Some people however, have a disproportionate gum tissue to teeth ratio, leaving more than desirable amount of gum on show. This is what is known as a gummy smile. Whilst a gummy smile poses no real health problem, it can cause a great deal of insecurity, leaving many feeling self-conscious about their smile.

A gummy smile (or excessive gingival display, as its formally known) can be caused for various reasons. In some cases, it is due to the teeth and how far they have erupted from the gum tissue. For others, it could be due to oversized gums. At times it is down to the upper lip size and response during smiling.

Around 25% of the population suffer from a gummy smile, so it’s a very common complaint in facial aesthetics. However that doesn’t mean you have to live with it. If you feel like your Gummy Smile is affecting your overall appearance and self-esteem, we have just the treatment for you.

How can a Gummy Smile be treated?

Thanks to our combined expertise in both dental and facial aesthetics, we can blend the best of both practices to offer a complete Gummy Smile Makeover.

The method that is employed to deliver a Gummy Smile makeover is determined by the predominant cause of excessive gum display. If it is the gums that are main culprit, then it is likely that most of the procedure will focus on this area. However, you may also find that in cases where the front teeth are very short or the lips too thin it is better to address these issues instead.

More often than not, we will use a combined approach to reduce the gum display, leaving you with a much enhanced, super smile to be proud of.

What to expect during Gummy Smile Treatment?

During Gummy Smile Treatment, you may experience one or all of the following procedures. The details of your bespoke treatment plan will be discussed at your initial consultation, so you know exactly what to expect.

Gum sculpting
To reduce excess gum tissue and create a perfectly contoured gum profile we make use of a practice known as gum sculpting. Using a high-precision, soft tissue laser we can carefully reduce and reshape the gums, to really show off the potential of your teeth. This procedure is performed by medical specialists under local anaesthetic delivering a perfectly defined gum line.

Teeth lengthening
If your gummy smile is due to shortness of teeth, this can easily be resolved through Composite Bonding. By attaching mouldable composite material to your existing tooth surface, we can extend and lengthen your tooth size to reduce the prominence of the gums. As an added benefit, your teeth will look bright, radiant and flawless improving on your smile even further.

Lip enhancement
Using either botox or filler, the shape of the lip can be improved to show less gum. In cases of hyper lip mobility (when the lip rises to far above the gum line) Botox is a great option for discouraging so much pull from the lip muscle. Where thin lips are the cause, filler is a brilliant solution for giving volume and definition to the natural lip line, creating the perfect frame for your teeth.

Are there any side effects to expect from Gummy Smile Treatment?

Injection related side effects are minimal and temporary such as redness, swelling, bruising. Spreading of the Botulinum toxin to the muscle nearby that can cause temporally relaxation can be easily prevented by avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for approximately 4 hours post treatment.
